Scientists find key human language gene

Category : Uncategorized

Thursday, November 12, 2009

Researchers have found a crucial genetic difference between humans and chimps that could help explain our language and speech abilities. The difference lies in a gene called FOXP2 which encodes for a protein of the same name. This acts as a transcription factor, controlling the activity of other genes.

The human and chimp versions of the protein differ in only two of their 740 amino acid components, but when researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, replaced the human gene with the chimp version in neurons grown in the laboratory, they found it affected the expression of at least 116 other genes.

The results are detailed in a paper published on Thursday in the scientific journal Nature.

Author of the study Dr. Daniel Geschwind, of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, said the gene had a “major role” in differences between chimps and humans. “We showed that the human and chimp versions of FOXP2 not only look different but function differently too.”

We believe FOXP2 is not only important for the higher order cognitive aspect of language but also for the motor aspect of speech and language

Some of the affected genes control the formation of connections in the brain, whilst others relate to facial movements. Several have already been found to be involved in language disorders. Mutations in FOXP2 itself were also known to affect speech and language; the gene was first identified in members of a family suffering from language problems who were found to share a genetic mutation.

Frances Vargha-Khadem at University College London has studied patients with FOXP2 mutations, and agrees with the new research. As well as language problems, some of her subjects have changes in the shape of their jaws, mouths and tongues. She thinks that chimps may also have these differences.

“We believe FOXP2 is not only important for the higher order cognitive aspect of language but also for the motor aspect of speech and language,” said Genevieve Konopka, one of the authors of the paper at UCLA.

Previous research indicates that the changes in FOXP2 occurred around 200,000 years ago with the rise of modern humans. Geschwind also suggests that several of the related genes may have evolved together. Preliminary studies have shown signs that they too emerged relatively recently.

Scientists are now keen to further study FOXP2 and the genes that it affects. Geschwind believes this could eventually lead to breakthroughs in treatment for disorders such as autism and schizophrenia, which affect language skills.

The study was funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, the A.P. Giannini Foundation and the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression.

Marussia F1 test driver Maria de Villota seriously injured in testing accident

Category : Uncategorized

Tuesday, July 3, 2012

The Marussia F1 team’s test driver, Spaniard María de Villota, was taken to hospital by air ambulance today after a collision in testing at Duxford Aerodrome.

At the end of her first installation run, the car she was driving had a low-speed collision with the loading ramp of the team’s support truck. According to BBC Cambridgeshire presenter Chris Mann, the car “suddenly accelerated” into the rear of the vehicle. The Marussia team released a statement an hour and a half after the accident, stating that she had been transferred to hospital, and a further statement would be issued once her condition had been assessed.

A spokesman for the East of England ambulance service, Gary Sanderson, said de Villota had “[…] sustained life-threatening injuries and following treatment at the scene by paramedics, she has been taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital for further care.” According to witnesses, she was motionless for about fifteen minutes as medical teams attended to her, but did move her hands before being taken away from the test track. Medical charity Magpas, whose volunteer paramedics attended the accident, reported she had sustained injuries to her head and face, and was in a ‘stable condition’ when she reached the hospital.

Marussia reported her as conscious later in the afternoon: “Since Maria’s arrival at the hospital at approximately 10.45am this morning, she has been receiving the best medical attention possible at the hospital, which is the region’s major trauma centre. Maria is conscious and medical assessments are ongoing. The team will await the outcome of these assessments before providing further comment. The team’s first priority at this time is Maria and her family.”

De Villota was announced as Marussia’s test driver in March, having prior experience driving for Alan Docking Racing in Superleague Formula in Spain.

Identifying Best Selling E Bay Items To Make A Profit

Category : Dinnerware

byAlma Abell

There are a lot of different ways that people get started selling items on eBay. For many people it started as a way to get rid of a bunch of stuff around their home. Then, when they had a good experience with that they started buying at garage sales and selling online. Before long they learned the tricks to determine what the best selling eBay items were and how to really make their listings sell.

This information is not a secret but it is a tool of the best eBay sellers. These people have all turned to eBay analytical software that allows them to closely monitor what is going on with the site, what is trending, what is hot, and what buyers are looking for.

Supply the Demand

The most important aspect of making a consistent profit on eBay is to be able to supply what people are looking for. This information on the best selling eBay items is ready available through top eBay software that provides you with multiple options for checking what buyers are looking for.

However, besides just knowing what people are searching for, it is important to be able to evaluate the keywords you are using in your listing to maximize your listing’s presence on search pages. For example, you may be listing a commemorative, branded or rare coffee mug that would be a collector’s item. If you simply list it as “coffee mug” you are going to get fewer hits than if you listed it is “rare, collectable, XYZ brand designer ceramic coffee mug”. Sometimes the difference between best selling eBay items and those that don’t sell is just the title.

Understand the Trends

The best selling eBay items trend just like things trend in a retail store. This means that you need to be able to look back over past listings, even past year listings, to see if demand for a product or item has changed.

If the trend is increasing it is a good time to buy in bulk at wholesale prices and sell online as it is one of the best selling eBay items at that time. However, if the sales are dropping or historically you are near the end of when buyers are looking for this item you may want to purchase fewer units or look for the next trending category.

England: Baby born with heart outside body operated on; surviving, three weeks after birth

Category : Uncategorized

Friday, December 15, 2017

On Tuesday, parents of baby Vanellope Hope Wilkins and representatives of Glenfield Hospital in Leicester, England reported to the press that Vanellope has survived three weeks after being born with her heart outside her chest, a rare birth defect known as ectopia cordis. She has been operated on three times, initially less than an hour after her birth on November 22, and will need further surgery; doctors believe she is the first baby in the United Kingdom to survive being born with the condition.

Vanellope’s parents, Naomi Findlay and Dean Wilkins, live in Bulwell, Nottinghamshire; Vanellope is Naomi’s third child. They learnt about the defect from a prenatal scan, but opted not to terminate the pregnancy. She was delivered prematurely by caesarian section by 50 people including four teams, placed in a sterile plastic bag and operated on 50 minutes later for the first of three times so far. Frances Bu’Lock, a consultant paediatric cardiologist at Glenfield, noted that unlike some cases of ectopia cordis, she does not have any heart defect or other displaced organs; at nine weeks, part of her stomach also protruded, but by sixteen weeks, only her heart was affected. Dr. Bu’Lock had originally told her parents she had only a “remote” chance of surviving.

Ectopia cordis is very rare and reportedly occurs in fewer than eight of every million babies born alive. It usually leads to a stillbirth when the pregnancy is not terminated, and with the likelihood of other associated congenital defects, plus the risk of infection, Vanellope’s survival is very unusual. Dr. Martin Ward-Platt, a member of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, stated “we wouldn’t expect a case like this to happen in the UK more often than once every five to 10 years.”

Her mother said they called her Vanellope after a character in the Disney film Wreck-It Ralph because she was born with “a glitch”.

The Importance Of Hiring Professionals With Equipment Used For Shredding Confidential Information

Category : Design Agency

byAlma Abell

Businesses across America collect more physical and digital confidential material per year than anyone can imagine. When this documentation requires updating or is no longer relevant, it must be disposed of properly so that none of the sensitive information falls into the wrong hands. This is when the services of a company like Shred Confidential become necessary. With a variety of Equipments used for Shredding, these professionals can safely dispose of all the undisclosed information a commercial facility needs to eliminate.

Storing any type of confidential information presents a security risk. These details can easily be kept under lock and key or with password protection, but when it comes to their disposal, things get trickier. In this day of environmental awareness, a business can’t just send these materials down to the incinerator to be burned. The chemicals and smoke released into the air may violate several EPA policies.

Owning an industrial-strength shredder also presents problems. The cost of constant shredder maintenance, proper waste disposal, and utilizing extra employee time can be wasteful. Hiring a seasoned shredding operation is the most secure, cost-effective, and environmentally-friendly way to be rid of this documentation. They will tailor their services and cost to best suit each client and help take the stress out of confidential waste management. These companies are certified to destroy everything on-site under the client’s watchful eye and safely remove the waste with a guarantee that it will never be compromised.

A common misconception tied to private documentation is that it is generally kept in paper format. In reality, there are many storage devices used everyday to hold secure files. When left unattended or casually discarded, the stored information could be illegally accessed. A prominent shredding business is prepared to handle this. Not only can they eliminate all the sensitive paper waste that quickly accumulates, they also provide Equipments used for Shredding digital storage devices like compact discs, cell phones, circuit boards, and flash drives. Just smashing these electronic devices does not guarantee that they can’t still be accessed. These specialized shredding tools and services are designed to ensure that the digital information is gone forever.

Commercial shredding services eliminate the theft risk associated with employee or client identities. By setting up a routine visitation plan, a client company can rest assured that all outdated confidential business information will be destroyed regularly by a team of professionals.

Arson charge for man who cleaned home with gasoline

Category : Uncategorized

Wednesday, April 8, 2009

Ernest Krajniak from Chilton, Wisconsin in the United States has been charged with arson after a lit cigarette ignited gasoline soaked clothes, setting his apartment ablaze.

On Friday April 3, Krajniak, 47, cleaned his entire apartment with about five gallons of gasoline, wiping everything down with the soaked clothes. After he was finished, he piled the soaked clothes in the center of his bedroom, lit a cigarette and then threw what was left of the still lit cigarette, into the pile.

Krajniak never called the fire department and never pulled the alarm. Instead he yelled ‘fire’ a few times then walked to the police station where an ambulance took him to a local hospital for the treatment of minor burns. The fire department later arrived to put out the blaze and his apartment was extensively smoke damaged. 11 other apartments were also damaged, leaving the occupants without a place to stay for at least a week.

“I should have never used that,” said Krajniak during a court appearance on Monday. He admitted to knowing that gasoline was highly flammable. He was arrested and his bond has been set a US$2,500. Krajniak’s next court appearance is scheduled for Monday, April 13. According to WISinfo.com, Krajniak has no prior criminal record.

The careless smoking of cigarettes has been blamed for thousands of fires across the U.S. In January 2008, an unnamed elderly woman in Buffalo, New York was receiving oxygen for medical problems in her home and lit a cigarette and began to smoke it. The oxygen coming from her mask then facilitated the ignition of her clothing, setting her on fire.

In the U.S. in 2002, only 4% of all residential fires were reportedly caused by smoking materials. These fires, however, were responsible for 19% of residential fire fatalities and 9% of injuries. The fatality rate due to smoking is nearly four times higher than the overall residential fire rate; injuries are more than twice as likely. Forty percent of all smoking fires start in the bedroom or living room/family room; in 35% of these fires, bedding or upholstered furniture are the items first ignited.

Garden Storage

Category : Structures

Submitted by: Jena Luthovski

Storage sheds tend to be chaotic disarray that resembles a wrestling tournament when you need to use and find something. It s advisable to begin with a basic metal or simple wood shed and eventually transform it into a lovely garden house. If you cover the exterior walls with vinyl lattice sheets; it can transform the simplicity of the storage structure into a lovely, attractive garden. It will store everything you need to maintain your garden and yard, as it keeps things in order and very handy. You can hang hand tools on the exterior walls and store large items inside the storage shed.

Pre-constructed storage sheds are readily available at home centers in a variety of styles and sizes. The vinyl lattice brackets and panels in various colors can be found there as well. You can set the shed where you will have access of ease to it from anywhere, leaving room to move a snow blower or a lawn mower in and out. Decorating the shed with lattice affords you to use it as a garden backdrop and to feel delighted about it being in clear view.

Materials and equipment that are needed to accomplish this exciting feat are:

Vinyl lattice with brackets

A saw

Portable drill with screws and screw bit

Large S hooks & handle grippers

Two 18 pots

The next step is to place a storage shed in the yard where it will not only be convenient, but attractive as well. Measure the exterior walls of the storage shed. You can purchase enough vinyl lattice sheets and brackets to cover the two widest and biggest outside walls. If desired, you can even cover the sheds back with lattice. If necessary, use a saw to cut lattice for an appropriate, snug fit.

Miter corners of brackets, screw the brackets into place and insert the lattice, before you screw the lattice to the storage shed. You can add to the joyous aesthetic of the shed s exterior by hanging a basket, a watering can or other items of decoration next to the practical ones. Place tree roses in pot prior to placing them near the entry of the shed. Finally, if you don t already own a storage shed, you will basically find the potential of a metal or even wood storage shed in your very own, picturesque backyard.

UK government announce police stop-and-search powers rethink

Category : Uncategorized

Wednesday, April 30, 2014

The UK government is to give new guidelines to police officers on the use of “stop and search” powers after a government inquiry found a quarter of stop and searches by officers may have been illegal. The Home Secretary, Theresa May, said today she will introduce a “comprehensive package” of measures including revised guidance to the police on the use of stop and search powers. The new guidance would clarify what counts as “reasonable grounds for suspicion” under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act.

The reforms also include an attempt to push the police to make stop and search records public, and adding new “unconscious bias awareness training” to try to reduce the possibility of prejudice influencing decisions by police officers. The reform announcement follows a consultation launched last July into the future of stop and search powers by the government.

May says she is not going to introduce new legislation to change stop and search but has not ruled it out if statistics do not change: “I want to make myself absolutely clear: if the numbers do not come down, if stop and search does not become more targeted, if those stop-to-arrest ratios do not improve considerably, the government will return with primary legislation to make those things happen”.

May also told Parliament: “Nobody wins when stop and search is misapplied. It is a waste of police time. It is unfair, especially to young, black men. It is bad for public confidence in the police”.

Research into stop and search powers found only one in ten searches led to an arrest, and black people were about six times more likely to be the subject of a search than their white counterparts. Following the reforms, officers who misuse stop and search powers may be subject to disciplinary procedures or lose the ability to use stop and search powers.

The shadow home secretary, Labour’s Yvette Cooper, said more radical plans for reform had been abandoned due to “regressive attitudes in Number 10” and the home secretary had “backed down” on the needed reforms.
