General Motors (GM) and Chrysler will receive bridge loans from the government of Canada and the provincial government of Ontario, however no more will be forthcoming from either Canadian or US governments unless the companies can reinvent themselves.
“This is a regrettable but necessary step to protect the Canadian economy. We are doing this on the assumption that we obviously cannot afford either in the United States or Canada a catastrophic short-term collapse.” said Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada.
“We cannot, we must not, and we will not let our auto industry simply vanish. This industry is, like no other, an emblem of the American spirit; a once and future symbol of America’s success,” said Barack Obama, President of the United States. “These companies – and this industry – must ultimately stand on their own, not as wards of the state.”File:Sinsheim quer.jpg
Chrysler will receive CA$1 billion and may in fact be eligible for as much as CA$4 billion. If Chrysler succeeds in the next 30 days with a restructuring plan it would be eligible for a US$6 billion loan. A part of Chrysler’s restructuring plan must include a partnership with Fiat within 30 days to appease the US administration. Fiat is a supplier of smaller fuel-efficient vehicles, and the merger will help Chrysler to be viable in the North American market. A Chrysler court bankruptcy would inevitably lead to it being sold off.
As a part of Chrysler’s restructuring plans, Tom LaSorda, the president of Chrysler announced that Canadian operations would fold if it does not receive both the US commitment of $2.3 billion of aid and a new Canadian Auto Workers CAW contract to reduce all-in costs by CA$19 per hour. As a result of this announcement Chrysler’s auto sales volume in Canada dropped 23% compared to March of 2008.
GM has until the end of May to restructure its company to receive up to CA$7.5 billion. As part of the companies restructuring, General Motor’s chief executive Rick Wagoner was replaced Sunday with Fritz Henderson, the current chief operating officer. Henderson spoke out on Tuesday that GM has submitted a restructuring plan which would close five plants, and this may be increased to meet the requirements for financial aid. He is in full compliance with Obama’s auto task force to seek bankruptcy if GM cannot negotiate with their unions, bondholders and others.
GM recently brought forward the “GM Total Confidence” program providing consumer purchase protection for customers who lose their job for economic reasons within the first two years from purchase. As a result of Chrysler’s restructuring announcement in Canada, GM’s Canadian vehicle sales volume fell only 17.3% compared to 2008, an increase from the previous month.
GM must reduce some of its legacy costs which include its pensions and union health care costs. A part of GM’s ailments arose from investing in supplying truck and SUVs during an economy of high gas prices when consumers were demanding fuel efficient vehicles.
Tony Clement, Canada’s Minister of Industry, is hoping that the CAW will support the restructuring process and re-negotiate their agreement. Whereas a United Auto Workers negotiator has said, “I don’t see how the UAW will do anything until they see what the bondholders will give up.”
The Obama administration is looking toward bankruptcy proceedings for the automakers, “as a mechanism to help them restructure quickly and emerge stronger. [It will] quickly clear away old debts that are weighing them down. What we are asking is difficult. It will require hard choices by companies. It will require unions and workers who have already made painful concessions to make even more. It will require creditors to recognise that they cannot hold out for the prospect of endless government bailouts.” said Obama.
The auto parts suppliers and IT software exporters in India have already been affected by the declining auto sales. GM and Chrysler software contracts provide US$300 to 350 million a year to vendors in India. As well these two major automakers usually award US$1 billion contracts to auto parts suppliers. “We are worried and closely watching the developments in the US to gauge the impact. The decline in auto sales in the US has already hit the order books of Indian suppliers,” said a Delhi auto parts supplier.
“Going forward, the industry will undoubtedly be smaller, but if our efforts are successful it will be viable and it will support good jobs for Canadians,” said Clements.
Betty Sutton, Ohio’s Congresswoman put forward the CARS act which provides a US$3,000 to 5,000 incentive for those who trade in their vehicle for a fuel-efficient car. “It clearly stimulates the economy, and it gets the consumer into the showroom and gets them buying again. But importantly — and this is what I particularly like about it — it really helps the environment quite a bit in two respects.” said William Clay Ford Jr., executive chairman of Ford Motor Co.
Ford Motor Company has not come forward with requests for assistance.
Since December GM and Chrysler have received US$17.4 billion government loans.

Top 5 Things That Guests Judge a Hotel on
by
Mitrelinen
A hotel visit is a treat for a lot of people and in many cases they will want to see high standards, after all, if you re paying for something you deserve the best. Fortunately for hotel owners, most people tend to look at the same things when they are visiting a hotel. So, here are the top 5 things that guests judge a hotel on.
Bed Linen:
What s the first thing people do when they go to a hotel? Well, in most cases they ll go over to the bed and take a look at the bed linen and the bed sheets. People will be looking for dirt, stains and wrinkles. Ensuring that your sheets are whiter than white and are also wrinkle free are a huge part of a hotel s success. If not done correctly, your guests will most likely become disgruntled, ask for another room or, at worst, leave the hotel.
Pillows and Duvets:
Of course, the next thing many people do when arriving in their hotel room is lie down on the bed in which case you will need to produce the most comfortable first experience possible. This means that you will need to turn the mattress regularly, ensure that there are no lumps in the pillows and also that the duvet is nice and even. Failing to turn the mattress will mean sagging mattresses and also a poor night s sleep not something you want your guests to have.
Towels and Bathrobes:
The bathroom is usually the next place to be examined in a hotel room, and ensuring that all the bathroom towels are spotless and ironed is only the beginning here. If a hotel has dirty or grotty looking towels, then it makes guests question where else standards may be falling.
Of course, towels should also be soft and this means that they will need to be washed with the appropriate detergent and additives. Vinegar is a popular additive to use as it allows the towels to fluff up, but unlike fabric softener it doesn t take away any of the absorbency.
Little things also make the difference and you should think about having your towels embroidered. If you then arrange them so the motif faces the front, it is apparent to your guests when they arrive that they re at a smart establishment. They ll also remember your brand should they take a towel as a memento!
If you offer towelling bathrobes, as many hotels now do, make sure that they are folded or hung properly, creating that fantastic first impression.
Carpets:
Of course, ensuring the carpets are clean and stain free is also part and parcel of the attention to detail. Rugs, mats and carpets should be checked regularly for stains and cleaned professionally if found dirty.
Coffee Service:
If your hotel provides guests with an in-room tea or coffee service, this should also be spotless and is often an area that hotels fall on. Make sure cups, saucers and teapots are spotless for best effect.
Follow these rules and you will create a beautiful hotel that leaves the best first impression on guests.

An attempt to cap the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has hit yet another obstacle, reported officials from British Petroleum (BP).
Friday night’s attempt to install a 6-inch (15.2cm) tube into the leaking drill pipe was only the latest in a series of efforts by BP to stop or slow down the spill. Previously, the oil company had tried to enclose the pipe with a large container dome, and then lowered a smaller “top hat” container dome. The siphon tube method is designed to reduce the amount of oil flowing into the ocean, but is not a permanent solution to stopping the leak altogether. It will draw the oil from the broken pipe to a tanker at the surface, said BP.
The tube was to be inserted into the broken pipe by robotic submarines, but the attempt on Friday to do so was unsuccessful, causing it to be taken back up for changes. The problem was a metal frame on the tube, which had changed position and this prevented the tube sent down from the drill ship Discover Enterprise from connecting. The tube had not been inserted into the leaking drill pipe before it was brought back up.
BP said that it would try again Saturday night (local time) to slow the leak using a reconfigured tube. If this attempt is unsuccessful, they will use the smaller dome to cap the leak, and may also try to plug the leak by covering it with trash, mud, or concrete. The company is already in the process of drilling relief wells to completely stop the leak, but this is expected to take several more months. The amount of oil currently leaking from the pipe is disputed, and BP said it has spent several hundred million US dollars in response to the oil spill.
BP was also given permission yesterday by the US Coast Guard and the Environmental Protection Agency to use chemical oil dispersants to combat the spill.

Whether the Civil War, World War II or the Iraq War, it can be challenging to face how conflict penetrates the psyche of a nation and surfaces in the nuances of life. There are thousands—if not millions—of individuals who indulge in fantasies others would deem perverse that have their nascence in some of the darkest moments of human history. It is possible someone you know pays a person to dress like a German Nazi to treat them like a “dirty Jew”, or to force them to pick cotton off the floor like a slave.
An S&M dungeon is a place where these individuals act out such taboos. Businesses that operate to meet their needs are often hidden, but they do exist and are typically legal. The clients want to remain confidential for fear of ostracism in their respective communities. As Sigmund Freud wrote, “Anyone who has violated a taboo becomes taboo himself because he possesses the dangerous quality of tempting others to follow his example.”
Last week Wikinews published the first in a two part series on the BDSM business: an interview with Bill & Rebecca, the owners of Rebecca’s Hidden Chamber. This week we publish the second part: an interview with three dungeon employees, Mistress Alex, Mistress Jada and Mistress Veronica. In their world, BDSM is a game, a harmless pursuit of roleplaying exercises that satiate the desires of the tabooed. These Dominatrixes are the kind of women men fantasize about, but they all look like they could be babysitting your children this Saturday night. Most likely, they will not be.
Mistress Alex has a distinctive sheen when David Shankbone walks into the room. Her moist skin cools quickly from the blow of the air conditioner she stands in front of. Just having finished an hour and a half session, she is dressed in a latex one-piece skirt and matching boots. Mistress Jada, a shapely Latina dressed in red, joins the conversation and remains throughout. When Alex needs to tend to a client, Mistress Veronica, who looks like she would be as comfortable teaching kindergarten as she would “tanning a man’s hide”, takes over for her.
The interview was neither sensational nor typical, but what you read may surprise, repulse, or even awaken feelings you never knew you had. Below is David Shankbone’s interview with three Dominatrixes.

Officials in France have issued a pollution alert after an unladen freighter grounded on a breakwater at Anglet, Basque yesterday. The vessel split in two and is leaking fuel oil.
The Luno had 120–160 cubic metres of fuel aboard when it broke down and high winds and waves pushed it into the breakwater. Helicopters rescued the twelve crewmembers and the only injury was a broken nose. The 100-metre ship was en route to pick up its usual fertiliser cargo and initially officials feared the vessel could spill a load.
The ship has split around the breakwater, one part remaining on the rocks at one side and the other pushed almost to the beach on the other. Junior transport, seas, and fishing minister Frederic Cuvillier is heading to Anglet. Anglet is near the Spanish border, with the ship registered in Spain.
One eyewitness, commenting to BBC News, called the rescuers “brave considering the state of the sea”. She said the ship had tried to anchor itself but broke away.

Tom Tancredo has been a member of the United States House of Representatives since 1999, representing the 6th Congressional District of Colorado. He rose to national prominence for his strong stance against illegal immigration and his announcement that he was a Republican candidate in the 2008 Presidential election. David Shankbone recently spoke with the Congressman and posed questions from Wikipedia editors and Wikinews reporters:
DS: Throughout my life my father, a lifelong Republican and an avid listener of Rush Limbaugh, told me that all we needed in this country was a Republican Congress, Republican Senate and a Republican White House to get this country on the right track. Last year he expressed his disappointment to me. So many Republicans, like my father, feel lied to or let down by the party. The rationale for the Iraq War, the sex and bribery scandals, the pork barrel projects, and, as Alan Greenspan recently pointed out, the fiscal irresponsibility. People feel there have been many broken promises. Why should someone vote Republican today?
DS: You yourself said you would only serve three terms in Congress, but then broke that promise. What caused you to reverse yourself?
DS: There are an estimated 12 million illegal aliens in the U.S. To round up and deport millions of people would be a major government undertaking, requiring massive federal spending and invasive enforcement. What level of funding would be necessary for U.S. Immigration and Customs to achieve the level of enforcement that you’d like to see?
DS: How long would full enforcement take for you to succeed?
DS: Can you explain your remarks about bombing the Islamic holy sites of Mecca and Medina as a deterrent to terrorists operating against the United States.
DS: But wouldn’t an attack on Mecca and Medina be an attack on a sovereign state?
DS: Aside from becoming President, if you could be granted three wishes, what would they be?
DS: Farmers rely heavily on seasonal manual labor. Strict enforcement of immigration laws will inevitably reduce the pool of migrant labor and thus increase costs. Do you support tariffs or other government intervention to keep American farm products competitive?
DS: Do you agree that our forefathers intended birthright citizenship?
DS: You and Karl Rove engaged, in your words, in a screaming match over immigration, and Rove said that you would never again “darken the doorstep of the White House.” Are you still considered persona non grata at the White House?
DS: Psychologist Robert Hare has discussed in his work the use of doublespeak as a hallmark of psychopaths, and social scientists have pointed out that the use of doublespeak is most prevalent in the fields of law and politics. Do these two trends alarm you?
DS: What is the proper role of Congress in the time of war?
DS: Politics is dominated by lawyers. What other group of people or professions would you prefer to see dominate the field of politics and why?
DS: Do you think lawyers are better for handling legislation and as politicians?
DS: You have supported proposed constitutional amendments that would ban abortion and same-sex marriage. You are also a strong supporter of the Second Amendment. Why do you believe that the U.S. Constitution should regulate medical procedures and personal relationships, but not gun ownership?
DS: You recently spoke out against the Black and Hispanic Congressional caucuses, stating, “It is utterly hypocritical for Congress to extol the virtues of a color-blind society while officially sanctioning caucuses that are based solely on race. If we are serious about achieving the goal of a colorblind society, Congress should lead by example and end these divisive, race-based caucuses.” Do you also believe there is no longer a need for the NAACP?
DS: You were one of a handful of Republicans who voted for a bill proposed by Maurice Hinchey and Dana Rohrabacher to stop the Department of Justice from raiding medical marijuana patients and caregivers in states where medical marijuana is legal, citing states’ rights concerns. On the other hand, you have suggested state legislators and mayors should be imprisoned for passing laws contrary to federal immigration law, and you support the Federal Marriage Amendment to ban gay marriage nationally. How do you reconcile these seemingly contradictory positions?
DS: If you had to support one of the Democratic candidates, which one would it be and why?

The house staging business is one of the fastest growing businesses in this country. Many people who are planning on putting their home on the market are looking for ways in which they can enhance their residence and make it appealing to the potential prospects that come to look through it. They can no longer just leave their house as is and hope some one will like it enough to make an offer.
The rewards of house staging are many. There is a lot of money to be made when you restage someones house prior to listing it. And then there is the total satisfaction of a job well done when that house sells quickly and the homeowner is ecstatic enough to not only give out references for you, but possibly provide a bonus as well.
The pleasures are simple. If you can picture looking at an ordinary room without pizzazz, a cluttered house with so much junk that every possible surface is loaded to the gills, or the tired old home that has lost its charm along the way, then you do not have to think too hard about the pleasure you will receive when you turn it around and beautify it.
The rewards of house staging come when you return the charm to a house that was built in 1927, but added bigger closets, updated the bathroom and kitchen, and decorated it into an eye-popping beauty. Or when you take the house built just a few years ago using the cheapest fixtures available and accented by the clients boring taste and make it look like a million dollars.
Doesnt it just take your breath away to walk through a home that was dull and boring but now, thanks to you, brings sighs of pleasure and anticipation from both the owners and the people walking through it deciding if they want to buy it? Can you think of anything nicer than looking at a masterpiece and saying I did that!
Regardless if you are new to the game or a consummate professional, you will be sure to find a lot of things that can give your professional staging business a boost. From slide shows to promotional postcards, to decorating software and tips on how to move furniture across carpet or hardwood flooring, you will find it all.
Professionally done, yet easy to comprehend and a snap to learn, these courses can be done at your own pace or learned quickly in as few as seven days or less. No need for expensive time-consuming seminars. No need to leave the house to take the course. All you need is a computer and the desire to become a home stager. That is it.
